The Bharathiar University was brought into existence in February, 1982. The University was set up by the Government of Tamilnadu under the provision of the Bharathiar University Act, 1981 at Coimbatore. The PG Centre of the Madras University formed the core of the Bharathiar University. In 1985 the University got the recognition from UGC New Delhi.

The University was named after the great national poet Subramania Bharathi. The motto of the University is “Educate to Elevate”. The University is aimed at participating in the task of inculcating necessary Knowledge, Skills and values among the youth.
