This University is named after Thiruvalluvar who was one of the greatest Tamil poets in history.
The University is presently located in Vellore Fort, which is one of the monuments of Vellore Town. The approximate circumference of the fort is 2600 meters.

The Thiruvalluvar University was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu on 16.10.2002.
